American full-lyric soprano Julia Stuart is entering her second season in the Opernstudio at Oper Frankfurt.

In the 2025/2026season, Ms. Stuart will sing Niece 2 in a revival of Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes, directed by Keith Warner and conducted by Thomas Guggeis; Katja in a revival of Mieczysław Weinberg’s Die Passagierin, directed by Ansel Weber and conducted by Leo Hussain; and Lady-in-Waiting in Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth, directed by R.B. Schlather and conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti.

During her first season at Oper Frankfurt, she made four role debuts: High Priestess in Verdi’s Aida, directed by Lydia Steiner, conducted by Giuseppe Mentuccia, The Shadow of the Virgin in Albéric Magnard’s Guercœur, directed by David Hermann, conducted by Marie Jacquot, Clotilde in Bellini’s Norma, directed by Christof Loy, conducted by Giuliano Carella, and a Blumenmädchen in Wagner’s Parsifal, directed by Brigitte Fassbaender, conducted by Thomas Guggeis. She also appeared in recital at the Kronberg Academy under the guidance of Brigitte Fassbaender, and sang in concerts with her Opernstudio colleagues in the Holzfoyer of Oper Frankfurt, presenting repertoire from Così fan tutte, Un ballo in maschera, Tosca, and Ariadne auf Naxos.

Prior to joining Oper Frankfurt, Ms. Stuart was a Festival Artist at Opera Saratoga, where she made her role debut as Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, conducted by Ryan McAdams and directed by Gisela Cardenas. Her performance received wide acclaim.

The Berkshire Eagle wrote:

“The sparkling find of Opera Saratoga’s season is the magnificent soprano Julia Stuart, whose pure, powerful Fiordiligi propelled a Così fan tutte that was cheeky, beautiful and well-acted.”

Times Union noted:

“Soprano Julia Stuart as Fiordiligi was the standout even before her grand second act aria ‘Per pietà, ben mio, perdona.’ While navigating its wide emotional range, Stuart seemed to burrow ever deeper into character.”

A 2023 graduate of The Juilliard School, Ms. Stuart earned a Graduate Diploma in Opera Studies at the Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts, where she was awarded the Novick Career Grant. While at Juilliard, she sang Ma Zegner in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up, directed by Mary Birnbaum and conducted by Steven Osgood. Opera News praised her for deploying “the weight of her multi-timbered soprano to communicate the burden Ma Zegner had to endure,” while Parterre Box described her voice as a “seemingly limitless supply of raw and electrifying vocal power.” She also made her Alice Tully Hall recital debut, won First Prize in the New York District of the NATS competition, performed scenes from La Bohème, and covered the role of Frau Fluth in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor.

Additional training includes SongFest (Professional Program), where she worked with Frederica von Stade, Jake Heggie, and Graham Johnson; Classic Lyric Arts in Novafeltria, Italy, focusing on bel canto repertoire; a Master of Music degree from the Mannes School of Music (2021); and a Bachelor of Music degree from UCLA (2018). At UCLA she sang Lillian Russell in Virgil Thomson’s The Mother of Us All, and participated in productions of Cendrillon, Così fan tutte, and I due Figaro.

She has participated in masterclasses with distinguished artists including Neil Shicoff, Diana Soviero, Edith Wiens, Brigitte Fassbaender, Frederica von Stade, Barbara Bonney, Graham Johnson, Lisette Oropesa, Steven Blier, Željko Lučić and Hedwig Fassbender. In addition to her vocal training, Ms. Stuart studied ballet and contemporary dance in California, and continues her acting studies with Mary Birnbaum and Broadway actor Nic Rouleau.
